12. Olavarría 486
Iglesia de San Juan Evangelista. (St. John Evangelist Church), designed by the architect Pablo Bessana. It was inaugurated on July 17, 1886. It is the first Silesian church in the world. The original structure was built in 1859, with pine wood planks donated by neighbors. It was formally declared a church ten years later. For the construction of the new building, they used wood brought in from the old dock of the Riachuelo donated by Tomás Drysdale. On August 23, 1870, it was decreed that La Boca was now a city with its own jurisdiction, when the first Justice of the Peace institution was created with headquarters in said church. Voting took place at the church atrium, which witnessed several brawls among different political party advocates.
