In search for realities regarding the psychic depths of man, surrealistic painting explored unexpected associations and surprising disproportions. Berni adopted these concepts in Paris by late 20’s and he developed them in paintings and collages that he exhibited in Buenos Aires in 1932. In these works, common objects acquire a major importance because of their excessive scale respect of the space they fill and their situation within unusual contexts. Other images add up to these strange effects, uncertain scenes, in which erotic obsession and helplessness facing violence are predominant. In some of these paintings, performed by Berni in Argentina, he introduced local elements such as landscapes including wire fences typical of the plains of the pampas or very simple buildings, frequently found in the country’s midland, opposed to characteristically European constructions.
