Stemming from a labor conflict between workers and patrons, a group of
Boquense strikers meeting at the
Sociedad Italiana (Italian Society) declare that the Argentine government cannot mix in with matters of the Genovese people. In this way, they raise the Genovese flag and sign a document through which they inform the king of Italy that they have founded the “Republic of La Boca”. Upon this rebellious act, President Julio A. Roca, appears himself in
La Boca and tears down the flag of the revolutionaries. As a consequence, a group of Genovese dissidents baptize one of the
La Boca streets with his name.
The Exposición Continental de Buenos Aires takes place, and although dedicated to the industry, it includes a modest exhibition of young artists who study in Europe. Painters such as Ballerini, Della Valle and Mendilaharzu, and sculptors such as Francisco Cafferata and Lucio Correa Morales have a chance to show their work.
