Inspired by the mythical independence movement of 1882, on December 13, a group of neighbors founded the Republic of La Boca. Gathered at La Confitería (The bakery bar), located on Alte. Brown and Pinzón streets, the group also becomes known as “los contreras de Quintana” (“the opposition of Quintana”), as a way to show their dislike for then president Dr. Manuel Quintana, known for his repression of the Boquense working class district.
