La mujer de la flor, 1937, oil, 100 x 100 cm., according to reproduction in Ars magazine, 1941. Also entitled La dama del sombrero negro
Berni started teaching drawing at the Escuela Preparatoria de Bellas Artes (later "Manuel Belgrano").
He was awarded the Premio Composición at the XXVII Salón Nacional de Artes Plásticas by his work Jujuy. In this monumental painting, in which the Andean altiplano landscape and colonial architecture merge, the powerful figures of the Collas are intended to exalt the native ethnical groups of the American continent.
Primeros pasos evidenced the inward tone of the characters, which he will continue to restate afterwards. In Club Atlético Nueva Chicago –bought in 1942 by The Museum of Modern Art of New York– Berni depicted popular types, in this case boys forming a neighbourhood soccer team.
